Homeschoolers Deserve Beautiful School Photos Too!
Kiddos in traditional schooling environments have been getting their photo taken every year for many decades. I remember getting my picture taken every year whether I wanted to or not. Unfortunately, homeschooled children don’t always have this same opportunity.
I Have A Soft Spot for Homeschoolers
Many of you already know that my family homeschools. We are just starting our seventh year and I have an 8th grader, 6th grader, and 3rd grader. When we decided to homeschool, I didn’t even consider all the things my kiddos would miss out on not being in a traditional school. One of those things I came to miss was the yearly school photo. While I realize that I am a photographer and I have tons of photos of my kiddos, there is something about the yearly documentation of the growth of my kids that I was sad to miss out on.
So, as my photography business was growing, I decided that I wanted to expand the photography services that I offer and school photography seemed like a natural fit. I already had experience photographing children in my family photography business so it felt like a no brainer.
Homeschool Photographer
After I did some research about this type of offering, I started to brainstorm how I was going to get some clients (schools). I started to think about the school age kids that I knew and where they went to school when a lightbulb went off – my kids do go to school – it just looks different than most.
My kids attend a Homeschool Coop once a week where they get instruction from someone other than me (YAY) and get to hang out with other homeschool kids. Maybe I should start with the “school” my kids go to. After getting the courage up (it’s nerve wracking to ask for someone’s business), I asked the Director of our Coop and she not only said “Yes”, she encouraged me to ask other Coops. I now photograph several local Homeschool Coops every year and I can say that the parents are so appreciative to also be able to have yearly photos of their kids.
Kids of All Ages
There are so many wonderful things about school photography, but one of the best things about photographing Homeschool Coops is that I get to work with kids of all ages. Some of the groups I work with have babies up to Seniors in high school. It makes for a challenging day but I love it.
Please take a look at some of my favorite images of a Homeschool Coop I photographed recently.
